What does the server management include?
The server management provided by Nine ensures a smooth operation.
Specifically, this includes the following components:
Installation and Configuration
Nine installs the necessary software/services from reliable software repositories. Nine manages the configuration files and implements the customer's requests as far as technically possible and reasonable. Nine is not responsible for customer-specific software, such as CMS.
Updates
Security patches for software installed by Nine are installed on an ongoing basis. If this requires a disruption or restart of a service, Nine will inform customers in advance. Service restarts during the weekly maintenance window will not be announced in advance.
Customers are responsible for installation of updates for their own software.
Brute Force Protection
Nine protects its servers against brute force attacks on SSH and FTP services. Failed login attempts of these services on all Managed Servers are analysed and the offending IP is blocked temporarily once a threshold of attempts is exceeded.
Monitoring of Services, Disk Space and RAID
Nine provides round-the-clock monitoring of the contracted services. In the event of a malfunction, a (standby) technician will be notified automatically by Nine and will restore operation as quickly as possible. In addition, the CPU utilisation and hard disk capacity as well as the RAID status (in case of a dedicated server) are analysed to detect emerging problems and take proactive countermeasures.
You'll be notified if the available disk space will cross the thresholds of 20 respectively 10%.
Additionally, you'll be informed automatically if there is a shortage on available memory: What is an "out of memory" event?
Backup
Each night, Nine creates a dump of all MySQL or PostgreSQL databases on your system (if either of the services is active).
In addition, the entire server (including the database dump) is backed up file by file to two storage systems, at least
one of which is located at a location separate from the Managed Server (Off-site). This backup does not include
directories that typically contain temporary files/caches (e.g. /tmp
). These daily backups are stored for 7 days.
The retention period of the backups can be extended for a fee.
